A Modest Proposal – Dublin’s Greenbelt

When I think of Dublin, I try to think of what sets it apart from other Tri-Valley cities. Mayor Lockhart calls Dublin the heart of the Tri-Valley – and it is certainly that as partially evidenced by it’s compassionate affordable housing program. But aside from the intangible features of Dublin, there really aren’t too many tangible features that makes Dublin a distinctive member of the Tri-Valley community. San Ramon and Pleasanton have dedicated huge amounts of land and municipal resources to serving their corporate campus constituents. Sunol is a sleep town with more golf courses per capita then any nearby city. Danville is…the place where the affluent call home. I propose that Dublin can have a greenbelt that runs along the Iron Horse Trail. The Dublin Greenbelt could be a lush and green artery that connects different parks along the way starting at Dublin Blvd. and Alcosta Blvd. The parks would need to be developed…however, with all the Camp Parks land that will be sold off to developers, the City of Dublin could encourage developers to include stunning new parks and to contribute to the greenbelt’s development (in lieu of some small % of affordable housing). The other win is that Dublin could also encourage East Bay Regional Parks to either manage the development or at least contribute funds to the development.

Boise, ID has a gorgeous greenbelt that leads pedestrians, cyclists, and roller bladers to parks – with each park more beautiful than the previous.

The Dublin greenbelt would be a glorious feature for both residents and visitors alike.
