Shannon Park and Community Center

by John M. Zukoski  |  Topics:  Development · Sustainability

The Shannon Park furniture replacement (e.g., picnic benches) and Community Center are both on target to be completed and available to Dublin’s residents by late fall or early winter of 2008. This is exciting news for Dublin residents. The new Shannon Community Center will be a breathtaking example of Dublin’s commitment to provide residents with facilities that are both stunning in beauty and built using environmentally responsible materials and methods. Please feel free to click on the conceptual drawings provided above and below this text.

Here is a summary describing the new Shannon Community Center taken from a pamphlet provided by the Dublin Parks and Community Services Department:

The new 19,700 square foot Shannon Community Center is under construction in Shannon Park. Construction is projected to be complete in the fall (or early winter) of 2008. The new Community Center will include many of the uses that were in the former facility such as classrooms and the Preschool. The Preschool will include two classrooms with connections to an outdoor play area. Some rooms will be larger to accommodate increases in use and be flexible for future programs. There will be a much larger Banquet Hall accommodating 300 people. This will also include a pre-function area and a full catering kitchen.

The new Community Center has been designed with sustainable green building standards which will meet a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver rating. Some of the design elements to meet this goal include highly efficient heating and air conditioning, the use of natural lighting, recycled or rapidly renewable resources (e.g., bamboo flooring), and materials that use environmentally friendly production methods.

I’m partial to the aquatic center because we live down the street from Emerald Glen Park. I could think of better ways to use that space than a swimming pool, but I think other residents will enjoy it. There’s no better feeling than driving by Emerald Glen Park every day and see it being USED. In Windemere, not one person ever used those empty parks. It’s great to see the community here using the amenities.
