Weekly Poll: What To Do With The Former Nielsen Elementary School Site

by John M. Zukoski  |  Topics:  Polls

The Dublin Unified School District (DUSD) decided to close Nielsen Elementary at the end of the last school year in order to save $375K/year in operating expenses. The students that had been attending Nielsen Elementary were relocated to Dublin Elementary.

The recent vacancy of the Nielsen Elementary school site brings a host of questions. One question that has already been answered by the DUSD Board of Trustees is that the Nielsen site will not be sold. Outside of that one constraint, the potential uses for the Nielsen site are nearly boundless. The DUSD has established these primary objectives: 1) district program expansion; 2) financial benefit to the district; and 3) service to the community.

According to the DUSD, the potential uses for the Nielsen site include:

  • Adult education classes;
  • Pre-school and day care (there is chatter that this may be offered at-cost to provide an affordable option for parents);
  • State Teachers Retirement System office space;
  • Dublin Partners In Education office and storage space;
  • Professional development for the DUSD; and
  • Special education programs; and park and recreation outside use.

This week’s poll question is – Which Potential Use of the Former Nielsen Elementary School Site Are You Most Excited About?

Note – please feel free to email our DUSD Trustees to let them know which potential use you’d most like to see implemented at the Nielsen site.

    I think there is a great need for an affordable pre-school for Dublin families to replace the one at Arroyo Vista that has been closed. The cost should be on a sliding scale according to income, like was done at Arroyo Vista. Maybe part of Nielsen school could be used for that, although a more central location like Arroyo Vista would be even better.

    Does anyone know if the Arroyo Vista pre-school will be rebuilt as part of the Arroyo Vista redevelopment?

    Arroyo Vista project has day care but not sure if pre school facilities. Nielsen should be kept and maintained as is. In case, there will be a need for another school in the area, it will be available. Pre school would be a good use. Adult education usage is excellent. One more usage we need is Senior Day Care. There are families now adays that are in need of senior day care. I am referring to pre dementia seniors, semi ambulatory seniors and seniors that cannot tend to themselves without the assistance of their children. The baby boom generation are getting at that age. Sons and daughters who take care of their old parents find hardship in caring for them during the daytime. Where they are at work. Those services are in need or will have a need. Alameda County have programs to fund services but not the facilities.

    At our board meeting tonight the proposed plan for uses for the Nielsen learning Center was shared with the board. Porposed uses include pre-schools Kidango and Montessori. The board will vote on the plan shortly after socializing it with the neighborhood, and the tenants wil move in by end of year.
