Fallon Sports Park Could Be Delayed

UPDATE – Iroonet’s request to operate a boarding house in Dublin Ranch was approved. Please visit Dublin Townhall for more details.
The Dublin City Council will consider deferring Phase I of the Fallon Sports Park during their Tuesday, March 17th meeting. While the lowest bid to build Phase I came in roughly 20% below the initial estimates, Dublin has had a precipitous drop in public facility impact fees due to reduced development. While Dublin could borrow the necessary funds to complete Phase I of the Sports Park (until impact fees start flowing in again), it is likely that the City Council will defer funding the project and hope to receive a Measure WW grant or funding from President Obama’s Reinvestment and Recovery stimulus program.
In addition to the Fallon Sports Park decision, Tuesday night’s meeting will include many controversial items:
- Boarding House in Dublin Ranch – an appeal of the Planning Commission’s decision to not approve Iroonet’s request to open a boarding house in Dublin Ranch.
- Springfield Montessori Daycare – consideration to approve Springfield Montessori’s request to build a 16,000 sq. ft. daycare and playground next to Fallon Middle School and the Sonata community.
- City Budget Updates – a presentation on Dublin’s city finances. The City now expects to have a $2.3M general fund deficit for the 2008-2009 fiscal year, primarily due to a nearly $3M reduction in estimated sales tax revenue (from the closure of car dealerships and large stores like Mervyn’s, Circuit City, Expo, and Shoe Pavilion).
- Shamrock Preschool – consideration to affirm Dublin’s Parks and Community Services commission and City Staff recommendation to continue the operation of Shamrock Preschool at Emerald Glen park. The current plan is to close Shamrock Preschool at Emerald Glen and open Shannon Preschool at the Shannon Community Center.
Be sure to arrive early – seats and copies of the agenda will be in short supply Tuesday night.

What was the outcome of the fallon sports park debate? Go or no go
9:17 AM on March 18th, 2009
Hi Anonymous – Fallon Sports Park is a go! The Council also approved the construction of a shade structure at the soccer fields, batting cage at the little league fields, pedestrian lighting at Fallon/Gleason entry, and a walkway bridge over the stream corridor to Lockhart Street.
We’ll be posting an update on Around Dublin and/or Dublin Townhall with more detail.
Thx, John Z.

I think anything being approved right now is amazing. The two parks are amazing being a person who lived in san jose my whole life. They are huge and have so much to offer the community. I know we all want different things, but is the aquatic center still a go…. thanks Dublin…. Tom

Hi Tom – unfortunately, planning for the Aquatic Center at Emerald Glen was pushed out again. My speculation is that construction of Fallon Sports Park is a critical wish not only for residents but also the developers at Sorrento East and Positano…whereas there may not be any developers (with big $$$ impact fees) clamoring to have the Aquatic Center built out at Emerald Glen.

Not fallon sports park related, but John can you find out if all the earth work that they are doing at the location for Pomenade phase 1 is a sign they are starting building work.

Hi Anonymous on March 23, 2009 9:30 AM – the project developer is starting work at the Promenade Phase I. However, they are still working to obtain permits to begin the building process. The work that we have been seeing is the rough grading for public improvements infrastructure (e.g., Grafton Street) and preliminary survey work for the building structures (e.g., the Club Sport, Mercantile, and parking).
Thx, John Z.
