The Dublin Rotary Club is bringing the Carson & Barnes circus to Dublin next weekend:

  • Friday June 5th at 7:30pm
  • Saturday June 6th at 1:30pm, 4:30pm, and 7:30pm
  • Sunday June 7th at 1:30pm and 4:30pm

The circus will be held directly across from Hacienda Crossings on the corner of Martinelli Way and Hacienda Drive (the empty lot that will eventually be home to The Green on Park Place).

Carson & Barnes has been providing quality family fun for over 70 years. Tickets can be purchased at Earl Anthony’s Bowling Center and on the Carson & Barnes website.

Seems appropriate, considering the circus that has gone on with Dublin development the past few years…

Please google this circus to learn more about them before going. Apparently they have a long history of treating animals badly, both in their care and in their training. The humane county of Sonoma County, the Marin Humane Society, the San Francisco SPCA, In Defense of Animals and a number of other local and national animal welfare organizations are united in protesting this circus.

Um, so, is this an Around Dublin promotion of the circus?

    Hi John,
Do you have any information on parking? I have a few South Bay friends with kids who may be interested in coming. The event looks great. Thanks.

Hi Anonymous on June 4, 2009 10:22 AM – there should be plenty of parking on-site at the circus. Come on out to enjoy the circus!

    Thx, John Z.

I just e-mailed the Rotary Club expressing my disgust for not doing their research before contracting out to this circus. It's just too bad I just learned about this now.

Our family will definitely not be attending this.

The trainer in this video is apparently still employed by the circus. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2KEjdcceng

I NEVER post here but I felt I had to say something.

If you want to boycott the circus, then that's your choice and your rights to do so. However, there's no reason to get nasty here and be rude about it. Esp. to John who spends countless hours trying to provide a service for folks in Dublin.

We make consumer decisions all the time, weighing out options to make a stand or not. Do you not buys items form China because of all their HUMAN rights violations there?

Or did you stop shopping a wal-mart after you heard how they treated their own employees there?

If so, that's great and you're a better person then I am.

Can you please extend that same respect for john and our leaders of dublin?

No one was nasty or rude. Providing video showing the trainers beating the elephants until they bleed, yelling obscenities, and telling the handlers to twist the bullhook until they hear the elephant scream in pain information residents need to make an informed choice about this operation. Especially since the train can also be heard saying that he can't do those things in front of the public. There are plenty of circuses that do not abuse animals. This isn't one of them.

Yeah that video was hard to watch. I wished that elephant went "elephant" on that trainer.

What I was referring to was asking "around dublin" (john) if they promoted this sort of circus. I think that is rude and not fair.

John was simply informing people that they were coming. For example, if john stated that new "toyota deadership is coming to dublin" that does not mean that he promotes japanese cars over americans.

My point is this, just to look around your house and see how many time you purchased things from questionable labor? Where humen are treat like those animals or worse.

Isn't what this blog is all about? It talks about what's happening AROUND DUBLIN. I am grateful for the service that John is providing with this website. However, I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Negative or positive. That's what blogging is all about. Another form of freedom of speech. The reader can then decide for themselves to filter out the information.

The 2nd poster just provided some general information regarding this circus. Nothing more. It leaves the reader to make their own judgement on what to do.

The 5th poster clarified that this Circus was promoted by Rotary Club and not by Around Dublin, and I think that cleared things up.

As far as bringing in another subject about human rights…unfortunately that's just another problematic issue. But it has nothing to do with the circus. If there was a post about imported toys from China moving to a new distribution facility in Dublin, feel free to discuss Human rights on that thread.

I once saw a this huge hummer with a bummer sticker that read "recylcle reduce and reuse"

    hahaha!

Freedom of speech is not an excuse for hypocrisy.

If you want, I can post this on a car thread somewhere.

I went to the website, and it's almost impossible to order tickets. The rules and instructions couldn't possibly be more confusing, and you can't even buy tickets online for the Dublin shows. Not that it matters, because nowhere do I see the prices. And if I want more info, I have to call the office… which is closed evenings and weekends; precisely when most people will be wanting to order.

So I guess if you found out about the event too late, you have to go on-site to buy tickets. Very unprofessional online ordering system, to say the least.

Well I was going to go to this circus and then read about the animal abuse. I didn't watch that video – I read enough here where I don't have too.

I will be skipping the circus.

Thank you to the city of Dublin for bringing in something so cool and different.

For all the people with the negative comments, GET A LIFE. If all you have to do is bash on people, the circus, or Dublin, then you need to move somewhere else and stop complaining. If you think what Dublin is doing is a joke, you life obviously is the real joke if you spend you time complaining about stupid things.

I do support the people who are against animal abuse though. It's not right but sadly its always going to happen.

Its always going to happen because we all support and allow it to happen. If you support the people against animal abuse why are you so angry on them if they are bashing the circus for that.

Do you really find it so cool watching elephants line up and do acts for which they had to go through tremendous pain and suffering?

    Dear Dublin High Grad 2009

Yes, the circus is different and some may think "cool" but at what expense? Is it cool that these animals are beaten horribly, just for some stupid trick?

Also, your notion of people who complain needing to move, I'm sure you're quite young but the History you learned at DHS should still be fresh in your memory: This country was FOUNDED by great leaders and thinkers who did complain and who did question the status quo. If they did not, we would be part of the United Kingdom still today-

People on this Blog care greatly about Dublin, and bashing its civic leaders or business practices are indeed part of what makes this country so strong- Without criticism, the powers-that-be are left unchecked, which is something we can hopefully all agree is not ideal-

I do not support the circus coming to Dublin because of it's animal abuse. However, this comment and all other comments regarding boycotting the circus I feel are not personal attacks to the city council. They have done many great things for the city in the past and will continue to do so in the future. This decision unfortunately was an ill made decision and does not necessarily mean that they support animal abuse. I think if they had known those facts before, this circus would definitely not be in town. I'm really sorry to hear that it is and I hope future decisions will be researched better.

I think the trainers in the video are horrible, insensitive people.

I do hope that your organization will reconsider before bringing this circus company back into your town. I live in Oklahoma, where the circus is based, and they are a terrible, terrible group. I truly believe that circus goers and those who bring them into places do not hate animals, I simply believe they are misinformed. If anyone residing in Dublin happens to read this and is a bit educated about the horror that goes on within the circus industry, please get some accurate information to the Rotary Club today!
