It's a pretty nice place and yes, things are different here (that's an understatement). Not for everybody, but for those who like it, exceptional. Ironically, the city I'm in, around the size of Livermore, doesn't have a Starbucks. And "support local/buy local" is at least as strong here as in the Tri-Valley, probably stronger. Many chains are here, but I'd bet that fewer meals & shopping dollars per capita are spent in them than in D/P/L. I’m actually typing this from Montana right now. Suggestion, I know a great place in Montana where you can build a one story log cabin with nearby shopping center consisting of for example star bucks, Texas road house, BJ's, Armadillo willys, Pizza Hut and if Star bucks isn't your flavor of the day, Peet's Coffee is just two blocks away if you need something to wash down that Hick Burger you got at the Micky D's adjacent to the Chevron station...:>) Another sad commentary from a minute minded individual…you are welcome to pack up and leave.
