Dublin Police Crack Down on Burglaries in Dublin Ranch

The usually tranquil North Dublin Ranch area has been hit with 5 reported residential burglaries over the past month (as noted on CrimeReports.com):
- In one case a homeowner was working in an upstairs office when he was alerted by a knocking at the door. By the time he retreated downstairs, the suspects had fled in a blue Saturn. They had apparently been in the home and he noticed the dining room window removed and dirt tracks on the carpet.
- Potential suspects in another case used a rented U-Haul truck to remove large items from a home that had just been purchased.
Dublin Police have moved boldly and swiftly to eliminate the wave of burglaries in the North Dublin Ranch area. Patrol officers have been instructed to concentrate additional patrol efforts and will continue to do so. Additionally, the Dublin Police department is planning to dedicate additional resources in the coming days in a proactive response to the recent increase in crime activity.
Further, the Crime Prevention Unit has already prepared a “Crime Prevention Alert” bulletin addressing this problem with some recommendations for residents. Crime Prevention staff will be out canvassing the neighborhood with this information first thing Monday morning (August 17th). This bulletin includes useful information on how residents can assist the police department in combating the burglaries.

I am not sure how they claimed they moved boldly? I saw one police car parked in front of the fire station once over the past month and never saw a police car at any other time.
There are too many empty houses in the neighborhood, I will report suspicious trucks or people from now on.

Hi Anonymous – it looks like there haven’t been any crimes reported in the North Dublin Ranch area for the past month. Have you heard about or seen any suspicious activities in the past month?
Thx, John Z.

Hi,
Can you please post a copy of the Crime Prevention Alert bulletin on the blog. It will be helpful for the broader audience in Dublin.

Thank you Santosh for the suggestion. Hopefully residents will do everything within their power to identify potential criminals before they have a chance to strike.
Thx, John Z.

The Elan condos are also having a problem with breakins. 3 in a two week period. One home had a security system and nothing was stolen, the other two had no security system and items were taken from the home. This happen in the middle of the day, between 10am and 12noon

Every home should have an alarm system. If you don’t have one, you’re asking for trouble.
By the way, it won’t matter if the police catch these guys. Probably a slap on the wrist and they’ll let ‘em go. They’ll then return to their old ways.

Hi Anonymous – just to follow-up, Officer Kennedy and the Crime Prevention staff of the Dublin Police department have spoken with the Elan, Avalon, and Camelia Place management team in an effort to promote their involvement in the “Crime Free Multi-Housing Program”. The Elan, Avalon, and Camelia Place management team has expressed an interest in attending the next training, which is scheduled for September 23, 2009.
This should be a step towards minimizing future occurrences of crime in the East Dublin BART Transit Village.
Thx, John Z.

I wish Dublin Ranch Golf community had gated access. We only have two major roads into the community. So if we build one gate at bent tree road, and the other gate near swimming pool area (I forgot the name of the street),would be much secure and safe. It will still be open to pedestrians but usually robbers use cars/trucks to haul and run away. I know installation and maintenance will cost a lot but we will have safe neighborhood and attract more home buyers with “gated community” title in the end. I heard several houses in the community got robbed about 3-4 years ago prior to this incidents happening right now. Maybe this is the time to discuss about “gated community” issue at HOA meeting.

Adding two gates isn’t going to fix the problem and is a false sense of security, since there are still many, many access points to the housing area. If you want a real gated community, you’ll need to add fences around the entire subdivision you’re trying to protect.
Also, by gating off the main driving paths into and out of the complex, when Fallon Sports Park is complete, more foot traffic will go down the parallel streets and in front of homes in the court by the fire house. One of those residents, I believe, was a victim of a burglary and that person probaby doesn’t want more traffic in front of his/her home.

How about something as simple as a neighborhood watch program? There are many people in and around Dublin Ranch who work inside the home or work from home. How can the neighborhood NOT band together and take a bite out of crime?

Just last week, I was driving through the neighborhood and saw the same car pass me 3 times on different streets. I followed the car for about a minute and then the car took off down Fallon towards the freeway. The car itself wasn’t suspicious — it was a nice, new Mercedes — but the driver didn’t seem like he “belonged” in the neighborhood.
I don’t know if that did any good or not, but it gave me peace of mind.

Hi Anonymous – we need more residents like yourself being vigilant and taking proper action the moment you suspect suspicious behavior. It is the only way to keep a community safe. You may even want to give the Crime Prevention hotline a call at 833-6687 if/when you see questionable activity in the future.
Great Job!

I think it is good that we all look out for stranger acting strange in our neighborhood Neighborhood watches are essential for our general safety. We should all seek out the Dublin police for instruction.
Curious about something though. A Mercedes doesn’t look suspicious to you, right? Although I am sure Bernie Maloof drove a few. What made them look like they didn’t “Belong”? Tough looking Italian Americans like the Sopranos? Big white guys wearing leather jackets? Were they Black or Latino? About 15% of our population fits that.
It shouldn’t be an assessment that they didn’t “belong”, but rather they acted out of sorts, looked at houses or people for a period of time. Kept driving around with no apparent destination. This has nothing to do with whether they belong…

I am completely astonished by the report of burglaries at Dublin Ranch. We need more specific details about these cases. I have lived here since 2005 and thank god, nothing has happened to us so far.

Did you guys know that on that same report that had Dublin Ranch data, there were twice as many thefts from autos all over town?

I just stumbled on this blog and this story, but even though I’m late, I had to leave a comment. I live in North Dublin Ranch, and last April, our house was burglarized on a Wednesday afternoon. The burglar blew off our front door frame to get in. The police did essentially nothing beyond showing up and filing a police report. When I spoke to a detective about the case a couple weeks later, he said the police have better things to do than investigate burglaries. He also said that the officers who responded to our call actually went above and beyond the call of duty by knocking on my next-door neighbor’s door and asking if he saw anything. Future prevention was obviously not a priority. The Neighborhood Watch team was extremely helpful, but none of my neighbors were interested in forming a watch group. I handed out more than 30 flyers to my immediate neighbors for a Neighborhood Watch meeting with a personal note about how our home was burglarized, and I talked in person to everyone I could. Only 4 people bothered to RSVP, and only 2 other families showed up to the meeting. I work from home and drive in and out of this neighborhood several times a day. I have noticed no increase in police presence here since our incident in April and certainly not since this rash of burglaries in August. Nor have I received any additional information from Crime Prevention as noted in this article. We have made significant safety improvements to our home since the burglary, and now we just hope that our house is harder to break into than our neighbor’s so we will be spared in the future. But when the police won’t investigate and the neighbors don’t care, what else can you do?

Very good point Robyn. Dublin police is a joke. I guess they prefer hiding all day trying to catch people speeding than doing a real job catching burglars.
It is sad that your Neighborhood Watch plan didn’t work out. North Dublin Ranch is small and maybe if the HOA leaders succeed in raising awareness across the whole neighborhood, it will happen. Isaw it was on the agenda last week. People are increasingly selfish in our society and will only wake up when it happens to them. 5 burglaries in such a small area means something…except for our busy overpaid policemen.

Hi Robyn – I’m sorry to hear about your horrendous experience. I’d like to suggest that you contact Mayor Tim Sbranti to share these concerns. He can be reached at tim.sbranti@ci.dublin.ca.us.
Cheers,
John Z.

It’s simple. If you have a yard, get more dogs…guard dogs. And make sure your home has a doggy door.
Outside of that, the HOA should be paying for security guards.

Also setup a security webcam to transmit through the web to your work.

I agree with installing a gate at Bent Tree – it is so open to EVERYONE right now – especially that a LOT of cars pass by to access the freeway via Croak Rd (and they’re not even our residents)… And true, it adds to the home’s value whe they are in a \gated community\….

just do what danville does…seems to work over there. or at least more strict punishment for crime violators or they will jsut do it again
