ClubSport, East Dublin–Style

With the Promenade moving forward, we checked in with David Grove, the director of development at Leisure Sports Inc., about plans for the new ClubSport fitness facility.

“We’re very excited about this,” he says. “It will have a different feel than other ClubSports—but in a good way.”

Envisioned as a sister club to the nearby Pleasanton facility, the smaller, yet-to-be-named Dublin club (50,000-square-feet to Pleasanton’s 180,000) aims to offer a more urban, upscale, adult-friendly vibe catered to its surrounding community.  Among the ideas for the new space is a café that transforms into a wine bar in the evenings, where members can enjoy drinks and small plates on an olive tree–lined dining deck overlooking the pool.

The luxury extends to a day spa with nine treatment rooms, offering everything from massages and facials to wraps and scrubs, and locker rooms with individual soaking tubs.  The men’s locker room will include a deluge shower for quick cold-water drenches.

While there will be no sports courts at the Dublin club, it will have more studio space. Rooms are planned for group yoga, private yoga, Pilates, personal training, large group exercise classes, a treadmill studio, and a unique tiered spin studio—its “stadium seating” design allowing everyone a clear view of the instructor.  And, rounding out the offerings are a weight room, cardio machine area, and childcare.

Grove says there will be reciprocal-use privileges for Dublin and Pleasanton club members, as there is currently between other ClubSport facilities, though specific details have not been finalized.  There is no word yet on an opening date, but expect about a year of construction to follow the first groundbreaking shovel.

Thank you very much for the update. I’m looking very forward to joining an up scale sporting club. It will be worth the wait. it’s been a long journey for most of us.

I’ve been thinking about joining Club Sport now, but don’t want to have to pay to rejoin in Dublin. Do you know if they’re doing to allow membership transfers?

I joined ClubSport about a year ago.. I cringed at thinking about the cost but now that I’m there I realize it’s so much more than just a workout place. You get daycare for 3 hours a day. That alone is a great thing and their daycare is not “ok kids, sit here and watch TV”—they actually have activities. They even have craft and sport and day camps (at a small extra cost) during the summer.. Plus, the people there are all so friendly- It’s not a pickup joint like other clubs and people all seem very friendly– This new one coming sounds great– I can bring my kids there while I work out and shower/change and have a glass of wine and watch a game. The kids love it since the daycare there is really fun– Weekends are even better with the pool and snack bar, music outside, BBQs on holidays, family movie nights on Fridays, and other great events.. You’ll really like it once you join and see all it has to offer–

This is great for the residents of east Dublin! I am a little concerned, though, about what the draw will be for other businesses in the same area. Grafton Place turned into a disaster with all of the open empty store fronts. What will make businesses want to open up in additional space elsewhere?

I wouldn’t call it a disaster so quickly. As the economy turns around, the wise promoters who will have built first will also be first to reap the benefits as there is not a tons of commercial space available in East Dublin. The promoters who wait for a consensus on the recession to be over will be 6-12 months behind in building their commercial centers.

There will be a ripple effect, B-Dub and Lowes attract people, Club Sport will attract more and soon, there will be more and more reason to go there for entertainment, shopping, eating instead of driving further.

Space at Grafton Station and the Promenade will be at a premium once the economy is running full-throttle. We’re already seeing signs of recovery on a local and national level. Plus, the developer at Grafton Station is offering fantastic lease rates for some of the units. Having the Promenade cleared for take off will also help attract businesses to Grafton Station that may have been skittish without knowing whether or not the Promenade would go forward.

        Thx, John Z.

I’ve been a member of the Pleasanton Clubsport for almost 4 years and love it! The plan sounds really nice. I like the idea of more studios. I personally don’t use the tennis or basketball courts, but more studio space would be great since I love doing yoga and pilates.

Hopefully when they plan out the studios they don’t put the yoga studio by the bar like it is in Pleasanton…not very relaxing to hear the blender going!

Can anyone who belongs to club sport tell me how much they pay per month for either themselves or a family.

I had the most basic, no-frills, single-person membership about four years ago, and it was $105/mo. I would assume it’s gone up a little since, but a current member will have to confirm. ClubSport offers A LOT for the price, however, I personally couldn’t make it work financially over the long term. For the amenities I was actually using (cardio, weights, and a class here or there), comparable gyms were half the price.

For $105 a month they ought to personally inject me with steroids. That’s insane. I’d much rather use my home gym where I can belch, pass wind, watch DVDs, make loud grunts, and not be looked down on for having skinny arms.

As nice as this new facility will be, it will always be inferior to the Pleasanton facility because it’s one third the size. Just like the Promenade will be inferior to Santana Row because it’ll be so much smaller. We need a huge, grand mecca like Santana Row so that we can be the envy of the Tri-Valley. Oh wait, we can use the DiManto land for that, if that greedy old man ever decides to sell it. Until then, East Dublin will never realize its full potential.

You think the brand new ClubSport will be inferior because of size? For those that don’t care about tennis, basketball or raquetball, the facilities should indeed be nicer—- Using size as a determining thing makes no sense.. Is Candlestick better than AT&T Park? Is Ohio State University better than Stanford? Is Concord better than Dublin?

I pay the money to a gym so I don’t have to work out next to people that want to belch, pass wind and grunt loudly—

Sounds like you’re getting excellent results with your home gym, seeing how you’re paranoid that people are looking down on you for having skinny arms–

ClubSport members don’t care about other people’s arm size or shape they are in to be honest- It’s less about that as you might find in other gyms… Yes, a home gym will give you zero interaction with others but some people actually like going to the gym, seeing friends, being social and working out in a group or around others.. For them, ClubSport seems to be a great choice (yes, I’ve belonged to 24hr fitness, Gold’s Gym, World Gym, Fitness USA, Bally’s, ClubOne and others…)…

And I pay nothing so that I can work out at home and not be around chit chatting social butterflies who hold up the squat rack because they’re discussing last night’s American Idol.

99% of the people in those gyms pay the money to show off and tell people they go to an expensive gym. The same people who spend a fortune on fancy cars and clothes, just to say they do, when in fact they don’t have a pot to p*ss in. There’s a saying for people like that: “Big hat, no cattle.” The fancy gyms are full of those people, and if they’d just stay home and save their money, they wouldn’t be so broke.

Of course, if people all thought like that, the economy would die. So come on, Clubsport, open up shop here in East Dublin. There are plenty of $100k’ers here who are ready to sign up despite that they can’t afford to buy a pack of Tic Tacs.

Hey, there, you sound so mean, probably because you do not have any social activities…You have your freedom to stay at home doing your own little stuff and other people have their choice to go to a nice gym to work out and socialize…Peace!!!

to the anonymous commenter regarding Dubliners who can’t afford their gym membership, it must be you looking in the mirror as you typed that comment. There is quite a bit a affluent in the area that can support type of upscale business. Me and my family cannot wait for this place to open. Working out at home is such a loner kind of thing, not for all. Sour grapes man!!
