Dublin Mayor Tim Sbranti announced last week that he is working with the Livermore Amador Valley Transit Authority (LAVTA) and Dr. Stephen Hanke of the Dublin Unified School District (DUSD) to create a more direct WHEELS bus route from east Dublin to Dublin High School.

The current bus route starting at the intersection of Bent Tree Drive and Fallon Road takes 34 minutes in the morning to arrive at Dublin High School and 32 minutes in the afternoon to arrive home on Bent Tree and Fallon Road. Additionally, there is only one bus in the morning that departs at 7:06am and two buses in the afternoon that depart at 2:52pm.

While WHEELS is prohibited by law from having bus routes that exclusively cater to school kids, they may be able to create shuttles that can get kids to school faster than the current time of 34 minutes.

It is fantastic to see that the City and the DUSD are working together to provide an expeditious route from east Dublin to Dublin High School for students until Tassajara Prep opens in 2012.

I think that’s a great initiative. Parents being forced to do more commuting to take their kids to the other side of town doesn’t make sense and not everyone has a at-home parent available in early afternoon (or want to buy a car for their kid). But the number of stops the 202 makes could easily be split up in more than one route.

What’s the big deal with a yellow school bus system? So many cities have them and it pick up/drop off kids at home.
