Free Parent Seminar on Underage Drinking
The City of Dublin, CA, is taking the growing epidemic of underage drinking very seriously. On May 19, 2009, the Dublin City Council adopted new regulations and fines designed to curb underage drinking. The new “Social Host” Ordinance went into effect immediately and holds persons “hosting” parties that serve alcohol responsible for making sure that guests drinking alcohol are 21 or older. The ordinance gives law enforcement an additional tool to combat underage drinking in Dublin. Violation of the ordinance is an infraction. Infractions are punishable by a fine of $100 for the first violation, a fine of $200 for the second violation, and a fine of $500 for each additional violation within one year of the first violation. The responsible persons need not be present at the gathering in order to be deemed in violation of its provisions.
Based on data compiled by California Department of Public Health, 29% of 11th graders, 15.8% of 9th graders, and 6.4% of 7th graders report that they have had at least one episode of binge drinking in the past 30 days. The Dublin community is very aware of these sobering statistics. Dublin Unified School District (DUSD), in conjunction with the City of Dublin, is offering a free informational seminar to our community on the dangers of binge drinking and the terrible consequences underage drinking can have on students, schools, and the community. Concerned parents and members of the Dublin community are welcome to attend this event, where an expert panel will discuss these issues and answer questions. Panel members include school and district staff, city support staff, and leaders from local community organizations who are working towards resolving this growing epidemic.
