Happy Bike Trails in Dublin

The City of Dublin, CA, strives to be one of the most bicyclist-friendly cities in the Tri-Valley. In July 2007 the Dublin City Council approved the first Citywide Bikeways Master Plan. The City created this plan to increase access to parks, trails, and open space, as well as to jobs and community facilities. The Bikeways Master Plan also takes into consideration the needs of bicyclists in balance with other modes of travel, while promoting cycling as a healthful and life-enriching activity. With the Bikeways Master Plan in place, the City of Dublin becomes eligible to compete for California state funding earmarked for bike path improvements.
Dublin residents currently enjoy a system of pedestrian-bicycle trails along creeks, channels, and some major roadways. Many of the new roads under development include either bicycle lanes or adjacent paths. The City has installed bicycle parking at key locations, including City Hall and the Dublin Library. Dublin Police Services organizes bicycle safety rodeos at several elementary schools each year and plans to expand this program in the future.
Some of the completed and ongoing projects from the Citywide Bikeways Master Plan include:
- Continued development of successful trail corridors such as the Tassajara Creek Trail and improved access to the Iron Horse Trail and other trails.
- Improved bicycle access to parks and open space including the Martin Canyon Creek trailhead, Stagecoach Park, Alamo Creek, and Emerald Glen Park.
- Bicycle lanes and routes on several key cross-city corridors, including Dublin Boulevard, San Ramon Road, Dougherty Road, Tassajara Road, and Fallon Road.
- Bikeways on key freeway crossings, including I-580 at San Ramon Road and Tassajara Road, and the Alamo Canal Trail undercrossing.
Workshops are currently held twice a year, usually in late fall (October or November) and mid-to-late spring (April or May). These workshops provide the public with an open forum to discuss programs and projects recommended for implementation from the Bikeways Master Plan. The most recent workshop was held on November 18, 2009, at the Dublin Library. During that workshop, City staff presented proposed bikeways programs and events included in the 2009-2010 Fiscal Year budget. The citywide bike ways master plan is inspiring.
Wish there were stand up reflectors glued to the bike lane,
like the ones you see on the side of the highway the 3-4 foot reflectors.
I think this would create a good balance where drivers not only are aware of cyclists they will not want to scratch their paint on the road marker.
