Bunjo’s Killer Laughs III Comedy Competition

Bunjo’s Comedy Club in Dublin, CA, will be hosting its third annual Killer Laughs Comedy Competition starting on March 5, 2010. This competition is a great opportunity to see some of the best comedians in the Bay Area battle it out for the title of “Killer Comic.” Dr. Sam Wilcke, an Around Dublin Blog favorite, will be competing on March 5th. The event will run every Friday night from March 5th until June 11th, and each show will start at 7:30PM.
The Preliminary Rounds will run from March 5th until April 23rd. The audience will be able to decide which comedians make it to the next round. The Quarter and Semi-Final Rounds will start April 30th and run until June 4th with the voting decided by both a panel of judges and the audience. The Final Round of eight contestants will be held on June 11th and the “Killer Comic” will be selected by both the judge panel and the audience. The judge panels are usually composed of well-known local residents and comedy industry veterans. Dublin Mayor Tim Sbranti was a judge for last year’s Final Round.
Bunjo’s Comedy Club is located at 6513 Regional Street in Dublin, CA, inside the Willow Tree Restaurant. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door for $5 during the Preliminary Rounds and $10 for each successive round. There is a two item minimum. Doors open at 7:00PM. Please visit Bunjo’s Comedy Club online or contact its Chief Executive Comic John DeKoven at (925) 264-4413 for more information.

I liked Bunjo’s, but will probably never go there again. I don’t appreciate half the comedians making Sarah Palin the butt of their stupid jokes. Yeah, that’s what I wanna do, spend $10 on tickets and another $15 on dinner, to be told I’m an idiot because I vote Republican. Totally kills the mood.
Man, Palin loses badly in the election and liberals can’t stop taking pot shots at her. They must be really, really scared that she’ll run. And they should be, because polls show right now that Obama would lose to an unnamed opponent. Yes, people would rather vote for a ghost than vote for that guy again. Looks like the honeymoon is over, and all those liberal “artist” comedians are scared to death. Why, just because working Americans refuse to pay for their healthcare?

To “Anonymous”,
My name is John DeKoven and I am the owner of Bunjo’s. I’m sorry I didn’t see this comment until now or I would have addressed it sooner. I’m sorry you didn’t appreciate the Sarah Palin jokes and I respect your right to not like them. While I will apologize and say that I’m sorry you didn’t have a good time, I can’t apologize for the jokes themselves as that is comedy and we do live in a world that practices free speech.
As an FYI I am a registered Republican and get teased about it all the time by my comedy friends.I have made plenty of jokes about Bush, Palin, Rove, just as I have made jokes about Obama, The Clintons, Jimmy Carter, the ACLU and more.
In my opinion this is what is wrong in the world today, everyone takes things so seriously. You can see this by your e-mail. When someone becomes a public figure then they subject themselves to not only scrutiny, but jokes as well. Just like the whole David Letterman / Sarah Palin thing. She is the one who brought it upon herself to have these jokes made and let’s not even get into her hypocricy because that’s a whole other story.
We’re never going to get 100% on our scorecard and especially with comedy people’s tastes can vastly vary. Some people like comics that cuss, some don’t. Some like comics that do props, some don’t. Some like comics that talk politics and some don’t.
So I totally respect your right to NOT like the show you saw and if you never want to come back that’s your prerogative. Thankfully we have building our customer base over the year and have many regulars. We also just won a Readers Choice Award for “Best Place to Get Together With Friends”.
I would offer you a pair of tickets to come see another show, but there’s no way I could guarantee you wouldn’t hear material that offends you so that would be of no use.
Take Care,
John DeKoven

Hey John, you’re a stand-up guy to respond to my comment. Your comedians have a right to say whatever jokes they want, but us customers have a right not to attend if we feel those comedians try to make us feel stupid because of our political beliefs.
It’s a risk. When you touch politics or religion, you risk pissing off and offending a good percentage of your customers. If I owned a comedy club, I’d enforce a rule where comedians can’t discuss either of those two topics. I don’t give a damn about religion, but clearly lots of paying customers do, and I’d need as many paying customers as possible. So why risk losing them?
For the record, I’m not registered with either party. I’d just never vote for a liberal.
However, this is the Bay Area. Liberals are the majority. So John, you don’t need to worry about offending Bay Area residents, because there aren’t many Republicans here. I won’t go to Bunjo’s again, but you don’t need me to. With all the liberals here, you’ll do fine. So let the Bush-and-Palin-bashing continue.

Hi Anonymous – I go to Bunjo’s pretty frequently because I always have a good time. The comics are hilarious and the vibe is very laid back. I don’t agree with the viewpoints of every comic, but I’ve learned to not take it so seriously. It’s okay for folks to have different opinions. I can’t think of a better way to see things from different angles. The key is to understand that the jokes are meant to entertain and provide folks with a few laughs.
Cheers, John Z.

Maybe this will make you feel better. Everybody knows Jon Stewart is a liberal, but he also makes fun of Obama sometimes. In fact, he asked Obama to kick his own a** a few days ago based on Obama’s words on one TV interview.
There are just a lot of laughing materials in politics and religion. Do not take it so seriously. Comic is just comic. Nothing more. One thing we need to be careful though is joking about Muslims. They may send suicide bombers…lol…

Way to make a stand! I hear there is an improv show at your local church on Monday night, perhaps that might suit your better.
It’s a _COMEDY_ show. Have a laugh and get over it.

There’s political comedy, which is one thing, and then there’s hateful bashing of someone as stupid, which is what I heard several times at my experience at Bunjo’s. The people around me also made anti-Palin catcalls, and one very prominent city figure (I’ll withhold this person’s name) was also very disrespectful. The message was clear: Palin’s a moron, and if you like her, agree with her, or voted for her, you’re a moron too.
And perhaps I am a moron, because I paid $10, plus the 2-item minimum, to be told I’m a moron several times by several different comedians.
Last night Leno made a Bush joke, but it wasn’t hateful bashing. He said Reggie Bush did more for New Orleans than the other Bush ever did, which is a fair criticism, and thus, it wasn’t offensive to me. If you heard the Palin jokes, it was an entirely different tone.
And you can call it comedy, but most of the comedians weren’t even that funny. The headliner was good, but the others were average at best, and I’m pretty easy to please when it comes to comedians. They were more annoying than anything.
If you’re liberal and have low standards for what you find funny, you’ll like Bunjo’s. Otherwise, stick to Tommy T’s (far more expensive, but worth it).
