Tuesday, August 3, 2010, marks the 27th anniversary of National Night Out. Traditionally taking place on the first Tuesday of August, National Night Out began as a concept for generating greater crime prevention involvement among residents. In the past, residents would leave their porch lights on to demonstrate their anti-crime stance. Today, residents organize block parties, cookouts, parades, contests, neighborhood walks, festivals, rallies, and community service events such as a park clean-up.

Dublin Crime Prevention Unit encourages residents to plan an activity in which the neighborhood can reconnect and show its support for the original meaning behind National Night Out. Register the event with the Crime Prevention Unit, and members of Dublin police and fire services will schedule a block of time to visit the neighborhood. McGruff might also be available on that day. National Night Out is on August 3rd this year, and visits from the police and fire crews will take place from 5PM to 8PM. Call (925) 833-6677 for more information.

Residents who are interested in blocking off their street to hold a block party should contact the Public Works Department at (925)-833-6630 to get a Block Party/Encroachment Permit. To register a neighborhood event, please fill out the National Night Out registration form and fax it to (925) 452-2172 by July 30th.

We should keep up with this kind of event in Dublin. That’s one way to maintain Dublin’s reputation, and hopefully create a more cohesive and more sustainable environment for our kids. Most important is to keep the property value going up.

During the NNO, be sure to discuss methods to prevent or protect the home from burglars. One of the easisest and most affordable tools is to add an anti-kick in device such as the Door Devil (www.Doordevil.com).
