California’s budget deficit has a direct impact on the operation of Dublin and other cities throughout the state. The state budget deficit is currently projected to be $28B through mid-2012. The general fund budget is down 15% over the past three years to roughly $86B due to reduced income tax receipts related to high unemployment and reduced property values. While California’s economy is bigger than Russia’s, it also has the largest deficit and lowest credit rating of all states in the Union. In response to these danger signs, newly-elected California Governor Jerry Brown has proposed a three-step approach to solving California’s fiscal crisis. The governor is expected to be making a hard sell in his State of the State address before the State Legislature this afternoon.

After nearly 12 months of study and soliciting customer input, Dublin San Ramon Services District (DSRSD) recently sold $35,620,000 of bonds to the investment community. The bonds, in aggregate, sold at 5.69% for 30-years. “I’m very pleased,” says General Manager Bert Michalczyk. “This fixed rate series of bonds has eliminated the risks we faced with our existing debt structure and will stabilize future water rates for all our customers. The Board of Directors was very wise when they decided to refinance the way we did.”
According to Michalczyk, this favorable sale of bonds could not have happened without the decisions the Board made over the last 12 to 18 months to strengthen the District’s balance sheet and stabilize its income. These measures included a significant reduction in spending across the board in every aspect of District operations, the preservation of existing reserve levels and the diversification of revenues used for debt service payments to include rates as well as connection fees, the latter of which are unreliable sources of income.

Tommy Jones of Greenville, SC averaged 235 to take the lead after two rounds in the Professional Bowlers Association One A Day Earl Anthony Memorial Thursday at Earl Anthony’s Dublin Bowl in Dublin, CA. Mika Koivuniemi, who won the Tournament of Champions and a record $250,000 first prize last week for his ninth PBA Tour title and third major, finished the day in 31st just making the cut with a 2,994 pinfall. Defending champion Anthony LaCaze failed to advance to match play after finishing 45th.
Jones, a 13-time Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour titlist, had a 3,290 14-game pinfall to hold a 49-pin lead over PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber in second with 3,241. Jones had a 1,645 seven-game pinfall in Thursday’s early round and followed that up with an identical pinfall in the second round on games of 198, 269, 235, 221, 299, 234 and 189. “It’s quite a difference from bowling the Tournament of Champions last week which was about the worst I’ve bowled in a tournament,” said Jones, who finished 91st in the Tournament of Champions. “But that tournament is over and it’s time to move on and that’s the mindset you have to have.”

Sports Authority recently unveiled the eagerly anticipated design plans for its new location in Dublin, CA. Sports Authority will be opening in late 2011 and taking over 45,500 square feet, or roughly half, of the old Mervyn’s building in Downtown Dublin. The other half of the building is being reserved for a yet-to-be-named tenant.
Sports Authority’s new Dublin location will have a main entrance facing Dublin Boulevard with a beautifully landscaped, 12-foot walkway to shepherd customers from a newly redrawn parking lot into a newly renovated building. Although Sports Authority will not be replacing the dated pebbled stone facade that ruled the commercial building look in the 1970s, it will be creating a shopping environment that has a softer, more pedestrian friendly, and ultimately more inviting look-and-feel than the visual that Dublin has been stuck with for the past four decades.
