Hall of Famer Pete Weber After 36th PBA Tour Title

As the Number 2 seed for Sunday’s stepladder finals in the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) One A Day Earl Anthony Memorial at Earl Anthony’s Dublin Bowl in Dublin, CA, Hall of Famer Pete Weber of St. Ann, MO, likes his chances of winning his 36th career PBA Tour title. With 35 titles, the 48-year-old Weber currently ranks third on the all-time win list behind fellow Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr., with 47 titles and the late bowling legend Earl Anthony with 41. Weber’s last win came in the Lumber Liquidators Marathon Open last April, but he has gotten off to a slow start this season with a best finish of 17th in both the Brunswick Pro Bowling Cheetah Championship and GEICO Shark Championship.
“I feel I’m bowling well but just not scoring well,” Weber said. “A lot of times it comes down to the breaks you get. You can throw it good but not get the breaks, but when you do get the breaks you need to take advantage of them and I was able to do that this week. I have to give the fans a lot of credit because they were behind me and kept me pumped up.”
The tournament’s Number 1 seed is 24-year-old Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, NY, who is looking for his first Tour title. Ciminelli earned the top seed with an 11-6-1 overall match play record and 32-game 7,688 overall pinfall total after Friday’s final match play round, topping Weber, who had an 11-7 match play record and 7,572 overall pinfall.
Ciminelli’s previous best Tour finishes were second in the 2009 PBA Cheetah and Viper Championships and third in the 2010 United States Bowling Congress Masters. “It’s been a roller coaster season to this point but I’m feeling really comfortable now,” Ciminelli said. “A win would mean everything to me because it would be something I’ve wanted since I was four years old.”
Competing in the opening stepladder match that will be televised Sunday on ESPN2 at 2PM EST, or 11AM PST, will be Number 3 seed Patrick Allen of Wesley Chapel, FL against Number 4 seed Tommy Jones of Greenville, SC. Both players will be trying for a 14th Tour title.
Earl Anthony’s Dublin Bowl is located at 6750 Regional Street in Dublin, CA.
