SnowFlake has descended upon the Ulferts Center in Dublin, CA. As the latest dessert establishment to open at this East Bay Asian shopping plaza, SnowFlake specializes in snowflake shaved ice (雪花冰). Made with ice blocks that have been mixed with condensed milk, snowflake shaved ice is finer than traditional shaved ice. While the texture of snowflake shaved ice is similar to sorbets, the feathery ice sheet that comes off the shaver has a lightness and flare that is unlike anything we have ever tasted.

The launch flavors at SnowFlake include strawberry, pineapple, mango, chocolate, and white chocolate. Owners Jeff and Janice Kou use only fresh fruits and real chocolate in making the flavored iced blocks. “We had the opportunity to sample different snowflake shaved ice in Taiwan,” said Janice. “You can tell which vendors used powder for their flavoring and which vendors used real ingredients, because you can taste the difference right away.”

SnowFlake is celebrating its Grand Opening with a free tasting event the weekend of April 2nd, so guests can experience the buzz surrounding this popular Taiwanese ice treat for themselves on the house. Each guest can choose from one of six SnowFlake creations: Silky-Milky, Tropic Mango, i-Pineapple, Pink Lady, Belgium Coco, and January White Chocolate.

Four of the six creations come with either yogurt popping boba or passion fruit popping boba. Unlike traditional boba, which are chewy tapioca pearls, popping boba are liquid on the inside like ikura, or salmon roe. The miniature explosion of flavor in the mouth as you pop each one with your tongue complements the snow flake shaved ice very well.

In addition to the snowflake shaved ice, SnowFlake offers a variety of dessert and savory crepes that can serve as a quick snack or a complete meal. SnowFlake also has a small collection of specialty desserts including green tea tiramisu, chestnut creme brulee, and the one-of-a-kind black sesame tofu cheesecake. Co-owner Jeff makes these specialty desserts fresh every day.
