Top 5 PSAs on Dublin Hyundai Mega LED Billboard Once Approved by City Council

Dublin’s Planning Commission recently unanimously rejected a proposal by Dublin Hyundai to install a 450-square-foot, two-sided LED billboard in front of its car dealership along the I-580 corridor. Former-Dublin-mayor-turned-lobbyist Guy Houston noted that Dublin Hyundai will likely appeal the Planning Commission’s decision to Dublin’s City Council. Some of the letters written to Planning Manager Jeff Baker in support indicated that Dublin Mayor Tim Sbranti is also in support of the mega LED billboard. Based on this revelation, Dublin residents can expect Dublin City Council to override the Planning Commission’s unanimous rejection and approve the bigger, brighter, and flashier sign.
Dublin Hyundai lobbyist Guy Houston and Dublin School Board Trustee David Haubert both stressed to the Planning Commission that the 450-square-foot LED billboard proposal should be approved primarily because Dublin Hyundai is willing to display one public service announcement (PSA) for every four commercial messages. This PSA feature will likely be cited as one of the main reasons for approval if the City Council chooses to overrule the Planning Commission’s unanimous rejection at the appeal hearing.
In anticipation of the City Council’s likely approval, the Around Dublin Team would like to present the Top 5 PSAs drivers along the I-580 corridor would likely see on Dublin Hyundai’s mega LED billboard.
5. Dublin is a drug-free.
Does Dublin really need a sign that says drugs are not a problem within our city borders?

4. Dublin has zero tolerance against domestic violence.
According to the Domestic Violence Resource Center, one in four women has experienced some form of domestic violence in her lifetime. Between 600,000 and 6 million women are victims of domestic violence each year, and between 100,000 and 6 million men, depending on the type of survey used to obtain the data. On average, more than three women and one man are murdered by their intimate partners in this country every day. If you suspect domestic violence is taking place in your neighbor’s home, the number to call is (925)462-1212; if you believe the victim is in imminent danger, please call 911.
In the Tri-Valley, Shepherd’s Gate has earned a reputation for rebuilding shattered lives. The mission at Shepherd’s Gate is to meet the practical, spiritual, and emotional needs of battered and homeless women and children through the love of Jesus Christ, equipping them to lead a life of faith, hope, and love.

3. Teen drinking is not a problem.
Dublin’s Social Host Ordinance was enacted to curb underage drinking. Violation of the ordinance is an infraction. Infractions are punishable by a fine of $100 for the first violation, a fine of $200 for the second violation, and a fine of $500 for each additional violation within one year of the first violation. The responsible persons need not be present at the gathering in order to be deemed in violation of its provisions. If you suspect your neighbor is in violation of the social host ordinance, the number to call is (925)462-1212.

2. Are you pregnant?
The mega LED billboard can target pregnant teens throughout the Tri-Valley and complement the signs already installed on the back of many Wheels Buses. Help is available for pregnant teens at Axis Community Health.

1. Our politicians can be bought.

Regardless, public service announcements are in NO WAY a reason to approve this electronic monstrosity. There will never be a good reason. Guy Houston needs to keep his nose in Contra Costa County where it belongs… and if Mayor Sbranti ever wants my vote again, he’ll not approve it should it reach his desk. Same goes for the City Council. This is the worst thing that could happen to our community. Stand strong…even in the face of these so called, “public service announcements.” Phooey! Pit-aw!

I would support the “follow the money/our politicians can be bought” PSA…..however, I hope it doesn’t come to this. The sign would be a tacky eyesore!

It’s a travesty if this eyesore gets approval. If the City Council does override the Planning Commission it will have to face angry Dublin voters. Hey since Dublin has the tacky LED sign, maybe we should throw up a few casinos while we’re at it? Make it feel like the Reno of California!

Definitely, if it happens to be approved. We should start an organized protest in front of the city hall. Are the city counsil people on crack.

Great Idea, but why wait? Organized protests should begin immediately, BEFORE they make this mistake.

and, they can say all they want about PSAs… no PSA on a lighted football field (such is this billboard) is going to stop kids from taking guns to school or anything of that nature. strong parenting and not keeping guns available to youth is what prevents that.

Let’s start organizing now. You never want anything approved. Once it’s approved, it’s harder than Hell to undo it. Never let them get that far. Where should we meet? Petitions? Signs?

Hi Anonymous – Dublin Mayor Tim Sbranti confirmed today at the Rotary Club of Dublin Superstars event that Dublin Hyundai will not be submitting an appeal to the Planning Commission’s decision. Congratulations to all the residents that stood in unity against the mega-sign!
Thx, John Z.

Let me say that the Planning Commission voted unanimously to deny this project on a variety of grounds based upon existing City Code, policy and issues of CEQA non-exemption. I believe that the Commission made valid ‘findings’ according to our charter and that we also represented the majority community opinion. I also trust that building solid public policy should have nothing to do with personalities. Dublin residents are above that from what I see every day. We have a City that acts like a great Town and we have solid leadership.

I know people have moved onto other topics but just a thought as this signage thing along 580 will undoubtedly return again in the future. The City could commission a couple of Freeway signs paid for all the auto dealers in Dublin. One sign for the West side at Scarlett Court and one on the East side at the creek between Toyota and the GM Automall. West side’s sign known as “Dublin Auto Center West” will have the logos of all the dealers there along with Arlen Ness, Cassabian Motors and Moda Motorcars. The East will be known as “Dublin Auto Center East”. By doing this we have two uniform reasonable signs (not mega like Hyundai’s idea) along the Freeway that provides exposure to all the dealerships vs the alternative of 9-12 different individual signs for all the dealerships in Dublin. This idea is much like the Automall Sign in Fremont that is shared by a dozen dealers and yes with a reasonable size LED screen that could double for community messages. Personally I don’t like LED signs but this subject will come back again and again, why not nip it in the bud and put up these two city commissioned signs and we are done with that subject.
