Within the next few weeks, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) will begin the annual controlled burn at the Laboratory’s Site 300 experimental test site in the Altamont Hills southwest of the City of Tracy. The controlled burn will be performed by the Alameda County Fire Department under contract with Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC. The purpose of the controlled burn is to help prevent wildfires from spreading to or from the site. The burn process will involve careful burning along the site fence line and parts of the interior area under controlled conditions.

The burn schedule is heavily dependent on appropriate weather conditions, which are confirmed by air pollution control district meteorologists on the day of a planned burn. Area agencies identified in the controlled burn plan will be notified by telephone when a burn will take place.

This year’s Site 300 controlled burn plan can be found in the LLNL Environmental Document Repositories at the Tracy Public Library, located at 20 East Eaton Avenue in Tracy, CA, and the LLNL Discovery Center, located at East Gate Drive off Greenville Road in Livermore, CA. These documents are the Prescribed Burning Smoke Management Plan Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Site 300 and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Site 300 Explosive Test Facility Prescribed Burn/Smoke Management Plan. These documents are also posted on the LLNL Environmental Community Relations web site https://www-envirinfo.llnl.gov.
