After nearly a decade of waiting, the dream of having a state-of-the-art Recreation and Aquatic Complex at Emerald Glen Park in Dublin, CA will soon become reality. The design phase of the Emerald Glen Recreation and Aquatic Complex is set to kick-start again in July 2011. Construction at the site of the complex is scheduled to begin in October 2012 and to be completed in September 2014. The grand opening celebration will most likely be held shortly thereafter to take advantage of the beautiful weather leading into fall.

Phase I of the complex will house a 6,675-square-foot leisure and instructional pool, as well as a 25-meter by 25-yard competition pool. The complex will also include a 35,895-square-foot facility featuring a gym, fitness center, game room & teen center, group exercise & dance studio, special events room, juice bar, and locker rooms.

Design planning work for Phase I of the complex began in 2008 with a community workshop to gather feedback for the design plans held in January 2009; however, the project was placed on hold in 2009 due to a drop in new home construction, as Dublin and the rest of the country braced for the economic downturn. The City of Dublin receives funding to build parks from impact fees collected from developers on new construction projects.

The total cost of the complex is expected to be roughly $22M, of which $7.2M is currently unfunded per the City of Dublin’s 2010-2015 capital improvements budget. Based on this funding gap, completion of the Recreation and Aquatic Complex is contingent upon future development fees collected from the construction of new homes. The City’s likely decision to redesignate the land previously planned for the East Bay Muslim Community Center from public/semi-public use to residential use at a density of around 14 units per acre would help to bridge the project’s funding gap.

Dublin is currently expected to see at least 8,500 more homes built within its borders over the next few decades. The impact fee from every one of those homes is necessary for the successful completion of Emerald Glen Park and Fallon Sports Park. The current Eastern Dublin Specific Plan calls for:

  • close to 600 homes in Sorrento East,
  • more than 500 additional residences at the East Dublin Transit Center,
  • almost 1,000 homes in Wallis Ranch,
  • over 3,000 homes in Fallon Village, and
  • approximately 1,500 homes at the Camp Parks site.

Once the Eastern Dublin Specific Plan is amended to reflect the rezoning of the public/semi-public space that is located on the west side of Brannigan Street, north of Gleason Drive, the final tally of expected new homes will increase. The City of Dublin will be taking another important step toward making sure its population reaches above 80,000 residents at build-out, as projected by the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG).

We are just moving into the area (farthest east if Dublin) this week and would also be interested in whether this discussion on another high school is happening?

Yes, the second high school is coming! See the following article that apparently was just posted a couple of hours ago:

No, don’t listen to the previous commenter. The second high school is not coming. It is just wishful thinking by a small group of outside businessmen looking to make a quick profit on the backs of Dublin’s students. It’ll never happen, not if I can help it. Read my website at http://www.onedublin.org to find out why Dublin should only have one high school no matter how large it becomes or how far away it is from your home.

(Side note to my many followers: This comment is not large enough to merit posting on my comment verification page on onedublin.org. I’m sure everyone is familiar by now with my new comment policy. I don’t want the verification page to get cluttered with dozens of little comments. I’m only going to post big comments on that page. That criteria should be simple enough for anyone to understand. The only reason this comment is so long is because of this paragraph explaining why the comment is too small to need posting for verification purposes. It wouldn’t be fair to let an explanation about why the comment is too small to require verification cause the comment to become big enough to need verification.)

The more you write, the more confusing it is to read your posts. 8 lines to describe your self-verification policy as if anyone cared? Why don’t you write an essay about why Pleasanton, San Ramon and Livermore should have stuck to one high school only and the extensive damage they now suffer having more than one?

I am really getting angry that people are continuing to post comments on this insignificant website claiming to be me. I am not the person that posted the previous comment with the long silly explanation of why the comment is not being posted to my comment verification page. Someone is just trying to make me look stupid and petty, and they are doing a very poor job of it. I have a strict policy of cross-posting every one of my public comments on the comment verification page on http://www.onedublin.org. You will not see that previous comment on my comment verification page, so you can be absolutely certain that it was not posted by me, just like you can be absolutely certain that this comment is.

I can assure everyone that I am the real James Morehead, and I never use my middle initial in my postings. I don’t know how someone figured out my middle initial, but it must have taken a lot of snooping and detective work and I am thinking about initiating a lawsuit against that person for invasion of my privacy.

I do not like people attempting to make me look stupid, which I definitely am not. I don’t make a big deal about going to the best private high school in Canada. It’s just a fact and it’s really not that important. I also don’t care where my daughter goes to college, as long as she is happy with her selection. She is free to go to whatever college she prefers. She was the one who decided at a very young age that she wanted to go to Berkeley, not me. I’m proud of her and her choices and her brave fight against Tassajara Prep. Please ignore all those posts by imposters claiming to be me. I demand that John Zukoski delete all the comments falsely attributed to me. I am considering a libel or slander lawsuit against whoever is putting all those bogus words in my mouth.

I am proud to be fighting against a second public high school in Dublin. I am proud to be adored by the student body at Dublin High School and their parents and the school faculty and all personnel at the Dublin Unified School District. I’ve explained many times to the entire Dublin HS student body that a second high school would devastate their high school, so it makes me swell with pride when I see the students all banding together to unanimously proclaim that they love their high school so much that a second high school is not needed. Dublin is not Pleasanton, San Ramon, or Danville. Even if it reaches 80,000 residents some day, which I don’t believe, expert demographers hired by the school district have determined that Dublin will never have more than 3,000 high school students. Those 3,000 students will all fit easily into the newly-renovated Dublin High School, which is a very short drive from anywhere in Dublin, now and in the future.

This is all getting so preposterous! I am a close friend and supporter of James Morehead. I can almost guarantee that the preceding comment was not made by James. As a matter of fact, I suspect that none of the recent comments supposedly from James on Around Dublin were actually posted by him. He has much more important things to do than hang out on this website.

James is a genuinely great guy and would never say the boastful, divisive or condescending things that people are attributing to him. He just wants what’s best for our kids, without regard for his own self interests. I hate to bring this up out of fear of perpetuating a myth, but I know for a fact that James would never brag about going to the top high school in Canada. He would never boast about his daughter’s choice of college. He would never tell people to boycott a website or a local business. It’s extremely silly and immature of someone to make up such stuff, and for anyone to believe such obvious lies. James is just not like that. He is humble, fair-minded, and a great asset to our schools and our community.

Come on everyone, stop mocking and persecuting James Morehead. His support and leadership is vital to the future of Dublin’s public schools. He deserves our utmost respect and admiration, not childish criticism and pranks. Let’s all get behind James Morehead!
