StopWaste.Org just announced the Grand Prize winners for the Ready, Set, Recycle contest, a month-long recycling contest that gave Dublin and Fremont residents a chance to win up to $250 for having the least amount of recyclable and compostable materials in their trash bins. Richard and Sharon Lewis of Dublin and Donna Hill of Fremont have been named the two cities’ Best Recyclers.
From June 21–July 31, StopWaste.Org’s prize crew randomly selected garbage carts on the regular garbage collection days and rewarded those residents who were correctly separating their recyclables, compostables and trash. StopWaste.Org gave $50 to eight households from both Dublin and Fremont, and $250 as well as the title of Dublin and Fremont’s Best Recyclers to the best ones within the group.
At the recent Dublin City Council meeting, Richard and Sharon Lewis received an official commendation from the City Council and a check for $250 for being Dublin’s Best Recyclers. “We’ve always been avid recyclers and composters,” said Richard Lewis. “The Ready, Set, Recycle contest was a fun way of reinforcing the importance of recycling and composting so we were happy that we had a chance to participate. It’s my hope that the contest has inspired residents all over Dublin to keep up the good work.” Dublin and Fremont residents also had an opportunity to take the “I Recycle” online pledge and win a $15 gift card.

Solo commuters can start using the Express Lane on southbound I-680 on Monday, September 20, at 5AM. The carpool lane has been converted with new striping that designates specific entry and exit points. Overhead electronic signs will be visible beginning Monday, and the FasTrak electronic toll collection system will be switched on. The new Express Lane will be separated from general-purpose lanes by white double solid lines, except at entry and exit points.
The lane will operate Mondays to Fridays from 5AM to 8PM, replacing the current carpool lane hours. The lane will be “open to all” at night and on weekends. California Highway Patrol officers will provide enforcement using visual and electronic means.
“The opening of the I-680 Express Lane will launch a new era in Bay Area transportation and congestion management,” said Scott Haggerty, chair of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and of the joint powers authority overseeing the I-680 Express Lane. “For the first time, solo drivers have the choice of paying a toll electronically via a FasTrak toll tag to use the carpool lane. We’ve been waiting a long time for this.”

Several streets in Dublin, CA have been selected to receive an asphalt slurry seal. The slurry seal is a low cost surface treatment that saves the City a great deal of money and preserves the existing asphalt on the selected streets. Slurry seal is a liquid oil, crushed aggregate surface treatment that will require three to four hours to dry and be ready for traffic.
Residents who live on the streets selected for the treatment should park their cars on a street not scheduled to be sealed. Cars parked within the posted work area will be towed at the owners’ expense. The oil used in the treatment will stain cars, carpets, and floors, so residents should not travel through the slurry seal before it dries. Residents should refrain from washing cars or watering lawns the day the slurry seal is scheduled.

The Castro Valley Rotary Club, with the help of local East Bay merchants and service organizations, will once again be staging the Valley Blues Festival. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, September 18th, from noon to 7PM at the Rowell Ranch Rodeo Grounds, halfway between Castro Valley and Dublin, CA. Gates will open at 11AM.
The festival highlights local blues musicians in a casual atmosphere and combines it with other outdoor activities to make it a great afternoon outing for blues fans of all ages. Featured performers include Little Wolf and the Hellcats, The Von Trapps, and The Marshall Law Band. “We had a great time last year, and look forward to providing folks an even better event this year,” said Festival organizer and Rotary Club member Darrell Lavin. “Rowell Ranch provides the perfect place to take in a blues concert, with its intimate setting and rural feel, yet is just minutes from the Tri-Valley and Castro Valley, Hayward and San Leandro. And, it gives us all a chance to enjoy the talents of local area musicians.”
The Valley Blues Festival is a fund-raiser for the Castro Valley Rotary’s charitable contribution program. “We were seeking new ways to engage our community culturally, and at the same time make it easy to contribute to our local grant program,” said fellow organizer and Rotarian Randy Vanderbilt. “We look at the Blues Festival as a popular, easy-to-enjoy way to make a contribution to helping local charities such as the local Arts, Sports and Educational Foundations while enjoying a great afternoon of music. This sort of community support is especially critical in a time of tight budgets, so we are very happy to do our part, and also provide such fun entertainment.”

The Bunny Art Show at East Bay SPCA has been a huge hit in Dublin, CA. The concept of the Bunny Art Show was to have local artists create portraits of East Bay SPCA rabbits looking for forever homes. Tuesday, August 24th, marks the start of the new school year for Dublin’s public schools. Traffic at and near local school sites can be hectic before the school day starts and when the school day ends. Dublin Police Services would like to remind students, parents, and area residents to allow extra time when traveling during school drop off and pick up times, to drive cautiously, to look both ways when crossing the street, and to show common courtesy toward one another. The speed limit around schools when children are present is 25 miles per hour.
