The All-America City of Dublin, CA is accepting nominations for the 2011 Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Organization of the Year. The purpose of these awards is to recognize outstanding individuals and groups who have contributed to the quality of life in Dublin this past year. Nomination criteria for both the Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year Awards are based on the Dublin Pride – Integrity in Action Program’s 10 Characteristics: Responsibility, Respectfulness, Caring, Giving, Positive Attitude, Trustworthiness, Cooperation, Doing One’s Best, Honesty, and Self-Discipline. The Young Citizen of the Year recognizes the volunteer service of Dublin’s youth in 1st – 12th grade.
All nominees will be recognized at the Volunteer recognition event to be held at the Shannon Community Center on Friday, February 24, 2012, where the winners will be announced. The Organization of the Year will receive a $500 cash prize, and a $300 donation will be given to each the Citizen and Youth Citizen of the Year’s favorite non-profit organization.

Representative Pete Stark (D-CA) and Representative Sander Levin (D-MI), both Ranking Members on the Ways and Means Committee, recently highlighted a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showing that 2.5 million young adults now have health coverage thanks to health reform. “In just over a year, 2.5 million young adults are taking advantage of the opportunity to get health coverage on a parent’s plan,” noted Stark. “If that’s not a reflection of health care reform meeting an urgent need I don’t know what is. This is only one example of the many consumer benefits that will continue to be rolled out as the law is implemented. That is why I’ll continue to fight the out-of-touch Republican call for repeal.” Stark is running for the newly drawn 15th U.S. Congressional district (CA-15) in California. The City of Dublin, CA is part of this new 15th Congressional district in 2012.
A provision in the law allows young adults to obtain coverage on their parent’s health insurance plan until their 26th birthday. The number of insured 19-25 year olds grew significantly from 900,000, when this number was last reported in September, to the 2.5 million covered today. The policy went into effect in September 2010.

Motorists in and around Dublin, CA are advised of a demolition that will impact traffic later tonight. Weather permitting, The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) plans to close both directions of I-580 at Portola Avenue in Livermore from 11:00PM on Saturday, December 17th until 8:00AM on Sunday, the 18th. The Portola Avenue flyover will be demolished at that time. Eastbound traffic will detour via CA-84/Isabel Avenue, East Airway Blvd, Portola and North Livermore Avenues. Westbound, traffic will detour via North Livermore and Portola Avenues, East Airway Blvd and CA-84/Isabel Avenue. Drivers should expect delays and follow the detour signs. The demolition is expected to be noisy for nearby residents.

Shortly before his recent announcement of $1B in spending cuts, California Governor Jerry Brown shared an open letter to summarize his plan to help save California’s public schools and maintain public safety, as the Golden State bounces back from a grueling recession and a diminished tax base. The $1B in cuts will include reduced spending on higher education in California and the elimination of free school bus services, but the school districts were spared of the deeper cuts many had feared.
The California State Legislature sewn the seeds for these cuts in June this year, when it approved an overly optimistic budget. Thanks to the passage of Proposition 25, elected members of the state Assembly and Senate would not be paid if they fail to pass a balanced budget by the constitutional deadline. In an effort to avoid further pay cuts from the enforcement of Proposition 25 by State Controller John Chiang, California’s legislators donned their rose-colored glasses when drafting this year’s budget by assuming that $8.3B of additional revenue will flow into the state coffers from the spoils of an improved economy.

Alameda County Sheriff’s Office is hosting a community meeting on Saturday, December 17th at the Office of Emergency Services in Dublin, CA. The meeting will start at 11:00AM. The Office of Emergency Services is located at 4985 Broder Boulevard. The purpose of the community meeting is to provide an opportunity for area residents to share their concerns about the recent MythBusters cannonball incident with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, which oversees the Training Center in Dublin. Sheriff’s Office representatives will be joined by representatives from Dublin Police Services, as well as the City of Dublin.
The cannonball incident took place during the filming of a MythBusters episode at the Alameda County Bomb Disposal Range. MythBusters is a hit television show on the Discovery Channel. Sgt. Nelson, who also serves as a safety explosives expert for MythBusters, has claimed that proper safety protocol was followed. MythBusters does not pay a fixed fee to use the Alameda County Bomb Disposal Range; instead, the show has donated to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office. Representatives of the MythBusters program and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office are cooperating with the investigation by Dublin Police Services. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office currently runs Dublin Police Services for the City of Dublin by contract.

Dublin San Ramon Services District (DSRSD), a public agency charged with providing water and sewer services to Dublin, San Ramon, and Pleasanton, recently drew tremendous public outrage when its board of directors approved obscene compensation packages that included one-quarter-million dollars in bonuses to DSRSD’s top brass. The excessive bonuses have been financed by a series of rate hikes at a time when families and local businesses can least afford them. Nearly 100 residents sent emails in protest.

The Tri-Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau (TVCVB), a sales and marketing organization dedicated to promoting the Cities of Dublin, San Ramon, Pleasanton, and Livermore, as well as the Town of Danville in San Francisco’s East Bay, recently announced the appointment of G. Grant Raeside as executive director. Bringing more than 20 years of management, marketing, public relations and event planning experience, Raeside is charged with developing and managing the organization’s business plan and budget, reflective of the TVCVB’s mission of elevating the Tri-Valley as a top of mind destination for leisure travelers, meetings and events. Raeside joins the TVCVB following successful stints as executive director at the Sonoma Valley Vintners & Growers Alliance and San Luis Obispo Vintners Association.
During his tenure at Sonoma Valley Vintners & Growers Alliance, Raeside doubled revenues of the organization and established innovative programs that continue today. This experience will be key in his role of providing direction and oversight to the TVCVB staff and working with the organization’s 14-member board of directors.

Army Parks Reserve Forces Training Area of Dublin, CA is getting a solar facelift thanks to the Department of Defense (DoD). The DoD recently announced its intention to invest in Cogenra Solar hybrid solar arrays as part of the DoD Installation Energy Test Bed initiative for FY2012. This investment is part of an overall strategy to enhance energy security at military bases.

Nearly 24 hours after the notorious cannonball incident that made world news, the All-America City of Dublin, CA has finally come through with an official statement regarding the near tragedy. According to the City’s official statement, Dublin Police Services is now investigating the case involving an errant cannonball that struck two homes and damaged a vehicle in the City of Dublin earlier this week. Because the City of Dublin does not have jurisdictional oversight of activities that occur at the County’s Training Center, the City is asking residents to direct their questions and concerns to Sgt. J.D. Nelson, Public Information Officer for the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office. Sgt. Nelson may be reached at JNelson@acgov.org by e-mail or at (510) 225-5876 by cell. Dublin City Council and staff have more pressing business to tend to during this holiday season in the meantime.
